Cleaning Tips For Your Mattress' Long Life

Mattresses need care too. Most of the time we spend our time in bed, sleeping, relaxing. But it may cause your dead skin cells shed on it and later your mattress becomes the habitat of dust mites and bugs. Bed wetting of kids along with pet urine is the second issue that affects the mattress most. Pet hair can cause serious allergic diseases like asthma, dermatitis etc.

Mattress Cleaning

Most mattresses get very little care as we use clean sheets on them and forget about cleaning the mattresses. Cleaning a mattress is an easy job that can be done in about thirty minutes. First, you need to strip the bedding out of the protective mattress cover and wash it if it is made off cloth or you can dry clean it by giving it to some dry cleaning company. If the protective mattress cover is made of cloth you can wash it with some detergent or just can bleach it so that all the allergens get discarded. If you have a nice bright sunlight, then you can just put the whole mattress in sunlight and can let it air out.

If you can't wash the mattress, then you can go to the second step. Vacuuming is also good for cleaning your mattresses but the only disadvantage is that it can't remove the bed wetting stain or pet urine stain. But with the help of a powerful vacuum, you can easily remove all the dead skin cells, the mites or bugs that feed on them and the dust with no muscle power at all. It is so simple to live healthy if you clean all your assets, ie. carpets, rugs, mattresses and upholstered furniture.

While we make sure that the pillow covers and sheets covered over the mattress are properly washed and cleaned, few of us really bother to care for the underlying mattress that remains aloof from care and attention. Those who think there is no such thing as mattress caring and cleaning, follow the mattress cleaning tips stated below to add years to the life of your mattress:

Vacuum It

When you don't clean it regularly, it starts accumulating dust, grit, filth and dead skin cells over time. Hence, to keep it free from allergic dust particles and other contaminants, vacuum your mattress regularly and rotate it every time you do so. By rotating the mattress, you are allowing it to reduce the regular wear and tear and enhance the comfort and support it provides. Furthermore, when you are vacuuming the mattress, make sure you make use of the clean upholstery attachment if you don't want the vacuum cleaner to spread the accumulated dirt over the mattress.

Mattress Cleaning

Deodorize It

To bedeck the process of its cleaning and clearing, it is a good idea to make use of a natural deodorant to deodorize it. Since your mattress would have been accumulating all the sweat, dirt and other stuff over time, it is pretty obvious for it to develop a certain aroma. To effectively counteract this problem, sprinkle some baking soda over the mattress, leave it for around half an hour and then vacuum it with the same upholstery attachment. Not many people know that baking soda is an organic deodorizer that works great at deodorizing odors.

Use Mattress Protectors for Adequate Care

Mattress protectors are specifically designed to prevent it from accumulating dirt, dust and other filth that impacts its well being and durability over time. Since a mattress cannot be washed, the mattress protector layered over it can be easily washed to keep it looking fresh and smelling aromatic at all times. Moreover, if you have pets at home that snuggle with you in bed, then these protectors can prevent the bugs and mites from breeding on it.

How to deal with stains

Dealing with mattress stains is clearly not a walk in the park. Many of us don't know how to proceed with this chore. You can't really clean a mattress, in the same manner, you would use in cleaning other furniture. Soaking it in water is not advisable. Excess moisture inside the mattress can lead to the appearance of molds and mildew. On the other hand, you can get rid of the stains if you know which cleaners to use. So here are some cleaning tips you should know:

-Use distilled white vinegar for common food stains or sweat stains.
White vinegar can also disinfect your mattress and get rid of molds and mildew. Mix one cup of distilled white vinegar with two cups of water. Place it in a spray bottle.

Spray the cleaning solution on the affected areas of the mattress. You can also spray it all over the surface of the bed if you want to disinfect it. Give it an hour to get rid of the stains. Once the stains are already gone, wipe the surface of the mattress using a damp towel. Allow it to dry completely before using it again.

Mattress Cleaning

-You can use milk or hairspray to get rid of stubborn ink stains.
Soak a cotton pad in milk and place the cotton pad on the stained area of the mattress. It will absorb the ink stains. Hairspray also works in the same way. Just spray the affected area. Once the stains have already been dissolved, you can wipe the area clean using a damp towel.

-To get rid of blood stains, use hydrogen peroxide.
Apply hydrogen peroxide on the blood-stained areas and immediately sprinkle some table salt. The table salt will absorb the blood. Once it has absorbed the stains, wipe it off using a clean absorbent towel.

-For pee stains, you can use vinegar.
But as a substitute, lemon juice will work just as well. Mix lemon juice and water. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray it on the affected areas. This will also help get rid of pee smell. Let it stay there for about an hour.

After an hour, sprinkle baking soda on the stained parts. This will help get rid of lingering pee smell and absorb excess moisture in the foam layers. Vacuum your mattress to remove baking soda residues.
